Treatment of Minors - Consent

At NMK, client safety, professional boundaries, and clear consent practices are central to how we deliver care. The following guidelines outline the requirements for treating clients under 18, including supervision expectations, consent procedures, and therapist safety checks.

These standards form part of NMK’s Professional Code of Practice and apply to all therapists.

Treating Clients Under 18 (Minors)

Therapists who wish to treat clients under the age of 18 must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Hold a current Blue Card (Working With Children Check), or

  • Have a parent or legal guardian present for the entire duration of the treatment session.

Therapists who do not hold a Blue Card may still treat minors, provided a parent or guardian remains present for the full appointment.

Minor Consent Requirements

A Minor Consent Form must be completed for every client under 18, regardless of whether the therapist holds a Blue Card.

Before commencing treatment, therapists must ensure:

  • A parent or legal guardian has provided consent.

  • The Minor Consent Form has been completed.

  • The treatment approach has been explained and understood.

  • Professional boundaries and clear communication are maintained at all times.

If it becomes apparent at the time of arrival that a booking is for a minor and this was not previously advised, treatment must not proceed until the appropriate consent process has been completed.

Blue Cards & Police Checks

Blue Card (Working With Children – QLD)

A Blue Card allows therapists to treat minors without a parent or guardian present for the entire session. Therapists who choose not to obtain a Blue Card may still treat minors under supervised conditions as outlined above. Copies of valid Blue Cards must be uploaded to Employment Hero for record keeping.

National Police Checks

All therapists at NMK are required to hold a current National Police Check. This requirement supports consistent safety standards across the clinic and reflects NMK’s commitment to maintaining a professional and trusted environment for clients.

Remedial massage is not regulated under AHPRA, meaning criminal-history checks are not automatically mandated across the industry. NMK has chosen to align with broader healthcare expectations to promote safety, professionalism, and public confidence.

All police check information is handled with strict confidentiality.

Booking & Communication Considerations

Clients do not always indicate during booking that an appointment is for a minor, particularly with online bookings. Therapists are encouraged to work closely with reception to ensure the correct consent process is followed.

If a minor arrives without prior notice:

  • Pause the appointment.

  • Ensure a parent or guardian is present.

  • Complete the Minor Consent Form.

  • Confirm supervision requirements before treatment begins.

Supporting Safe Practice at NMK

These standards are designed to protect therapists, clients, and the NMK community. Clear consent processes and safety checks help maintain professional boundaries, support vulnerable clients, and uphold the level of care NMK is known for.

If you are unsure about any aspect of treating minors or consent requirements, please speak with your Clinic Manager before proceeding with treatment.
